{"id":98,"date":"2013-01-15T07:43:58","date_gmt":"2013-01-15T12:43:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/v2ctm.org\/?p=98"},"modified":"2013-01-15T07:48:58","modified_gmt":"2013-01-15T12:48:58","slug":"math-specialists-not-on-the-table-this-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/v2ctm.org\/?p=98","title":{"rendered":"Math Specialists not on the table this year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Michael Bolling passed along some disappointing news from the Virginia General Assembly&#8217;s January 2013 session.<\/p>\n<p>You may remember that the Virginia Board of Education provided the Governor and General Assembly with a report at the end of November that included recommendations for changes to the Standards of Quality or SOQ (this is a section of the Code of Virginia \u2013 Virginia Law), which mandate minimum staffing ratios and other elements of the foundational educational program all Virginia school divisions must provide.<\/p>\n<p>The board\u2019s recommended SOQ revisions included:<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 One reading specialist for every 1,000 K-12 students and <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">one mathematics specialist for every 1,000 K-8 students;<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 One educational data coordinator for every 1,000 K-12 students;<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 One full-time assistant principal for every 400 K-12 students and one full-time principal for all elementary schools; and<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Inclusion of the state\u2019s Early Intervention Reading Initiative and Algebra Readiness Initiative in the SOQ funding model.<\/p>\n<p>The board\u2019s recommendation for one mathematics specialist for every 1,000 K-8 students was<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong> not included in the Governor\u2019s budget<\/strong><\/span>, and we are not currently aware of any legislation addressing this topic.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Michael Bolling passed along some disappointing news from the Virginia General Assembly&#8217;s January 2013 session.
